The Steps I Took to Land My First Freelance Writing Job
Do you want to be a freelance writer but have no clue how to start? Or, are trying to make some money as a freelance writer and all youre getting are one-off content jobs for $20? Navigating the world of freelancing can be a challenge if you dont know where to find jobs or how to have steady work. I started freelance writing over two years ago. My twins werent even two years old when I landed my first client. I was new and made a lot of mistakes. Looking back now I see the steps that helped me land my first freelance writing job as a writer for an automotive website. Lets first look at what didnt work and then what did work. You Cant Make a Living With Freelance Marketplaces The very first place I found work was on iWriter. Now I know this isnt a freelance marketplace; its a content mill. All I knew was that it was easy to sign up and create a profile, look for a gig and get hired. My first ââ¬â and only ââ¬â writing job I had was for a toy product description. It was around 300 words, but it took me hours to write. Why? Well, I had no idea what the toy was and had to research on Amazon and YouTube to get an idea of its features. I then had to create a small description about the toy using a conversational tone. The client didnt want just a bullet list of the features or specifications. The client wanted a bit of a backstory to the toy. I finished the piece and received payment ââ¬â $1.62 and decided this was not for me. I didnt have the time to waste writing for pennies. No way. I switched gears and signed up to Guru and Upwork (it was oDesk at the time). I created profiles and set my rate and pitched to jobs. I pitched to countless jobs and didnt land any of them. Im not sure why I never landed any of those gigs. It could have been my lack of experience or the rate I bid was too high. Im actually happy I never landed a gig with Upwork because I think I wouldve totally given up and not have pursued freelance writing. I realized it was impossible to make a living as a writer since the work on that platform was ghostwritten and your pay is based on your rate and not the value you place on your content. Letting Doubt Stop Me One thing I had to battle with as a new writer was the constant doubt I had. I felt like an imposter and knew I didnt have the credentials to back me up. Why would anyone hire me? Im not a journalist. Im not a good writer. Im an introvert. For a while, I was paralyzed, and my doubts took over me, but with some much-needed pep talks by my husband I was able to snap out of it and get back in the game. Here is what helped me land my first freelance writing job. I Created an Online Presence I learned early that to make it out there as a freelance writer (away from Upwork and other freelance marketplaces) I had to make a name for myself. But how? I decided to set up a Twitter account and LinkedIn account. I also knew I needed aà home base or a website for my services. At first, my niche was generalized. I didnt want to pigeonhole my service and felt that if I was just a content writer that ANYONE would hire me. I now know that thats the wrong way to approach freelance writing, but back then I still managed to get clients, so it didnt hold me back that much. So, my website and my social media profiles helped me get online, but I still needed a way for prospects to find me. They werent going to stumble on my site anytime soon. I had to find a way to spread the news I was a freelance writer. I Strategically Guest Posted Can I tell you a secret? When I first started out as a freelance writer, I looked up to a lot of other freelance writers. I studied their website, their copy and where they were writing. Then I researched if those places hired or accepted guests posts. If that successful writer published on Social Media Today, you bet I will try that too was my philosophy back then. I made sure to write guest posts in my niche back then (health and parenting) and guest post on sites that I saw other freelance writers guest post on (like Social Media Today and Brazen Careerist). During this time I started a blog but mostly blogged about the world of freelance writing since it was a new passion of mine and I wanted to write about it. So in a month or so I had several guest posts out, started a blog and was ready to start pitching. I Pitched Hard I learned that the more I pitched, the better chance I had at landing gigs. But, in the beginning, I just pitched to ads I liked and were in my niche. Those pitches were for a lot of health and parenting blogging gigs. The pay wasnt the greatest ($25 a post), but I just wanted to land a gig. I also did some cold pitching and pitched to educational companies that used Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). Since my educational background is in Psychology and ABA therapy, I thought there might be a need for a content writer that understands the principles of behaviorism. After a while though, I wasnt getting any responses to my pitches. I had to make a change. Right then and there I decided that I had to pitch to jobs that werent in my niche, but were still interesting to me. I pitched to job ads for a: Canadian living writer Pilates writer Article writer for a refrigeration company Pet writer WordPress theme writer If I was remotely interested in it, I pitched to it. And one of my pitches caught the eye of the editor for an automotive enthusiast site. Soon after I had an inquiry for social media writing and editing. I found new confidence and started getting inquiries for eBook formatting and eBook cover design. I couldnt believe I was getting paid to do all this fun stuff. I love creative work and writing. I finally found a path to getting paid for my value and making a living as a writer. I wasnt scrambling trying to land a gig for $25. I was making $100 a post, then $120 and I kept moving up and up and recently, I made $600 from a post under 1500 words. Informative Essay Sample on Sartre and His Background Jean Paul Sartre was born in Paris in 1905. He was the first child of a marriage between his parents of about over a year. His father, Jean-Baptiste, had died from an infection contracted while he served in the French navy when his son was still very young. Jean Paul grew up in the home of his grandfather, Karl Schweitzer along with his mother, Anne-Marie in Paris. Other circumstances, other than the death of his father also made Sartreââ¬â¢s childhood difficult. He was noticeably small in stature and visibly cross-eyed besides being over-intelligent and bookish. Sartre found it very hard gaining acceptance, and so he turned to writing. With the help of his grandfatherââ¬â¢s tutoring, he wrote a book entitled Les Mots (The Words) which related the experience of himself and his mother in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris in search of buddies to play around with. Another upsetting moment in Sartreââ¬â¢s life was his motherââ¬â¢s re-marriage to Joseph Mancy, after this event Sartre started acting up in school and became a bad behaved pupil. As Sartre grew up and went to a university, he studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure from 1924 to 1929 and became professor of philosophy at Le Havre in 1931. From 1931 to 1945 he worked as a teacher and traveled in Egypt, Greece, and Italy. In 1933-34 he received some money from the Institute Francais, and studied in Berlin the writings of German philosophers, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. During World War II, Sartre was drafted into the French military. He was given a job in the meteorological section in charge of the management of weather balloons. He was later captured in June 1940 and imprisoned for nine months by the Germans. In 1941 he was released on the basis that the Germanââ¬â¢s did not think he was physically fir for military service. However, for a short time while he was captive, he lost his freedom, which he valued above all. He was later active in the French resistance movement. Sartre gave up teaching after the war and devoted all his time to writing and political activity. Sartreââ¬â¢s first novel La Nauseeââ¬â¢ (Nausea) was published in 1938. This novel expressed under the influence of German philosopher Edmund Husserls that human life has no purpose. Sartre has always admired Husserlââ¬â¢s beliefs and he took ideas from his ideology of existentialism. While he was a prisoner of war, Sartre came out with the philosophical work, Being and Nothingness. He wrote that humans create their own world by rebelling against authority and by accepting personal responsibility for their actions; no higher power guides them through life. Sartres existentialism explains that in man, and in man alone, existence preceded essence, basically that man must create his own essence. Jean Paul Sartre was a French novelist, playwright, literary critic, political journalist, and an existentialist philosopher. Sartre was awarded the Noble Prize for literature in 1964, but he refused to accept the award, saying it would limit his achievements as a writer. Many events in Sartreââ¬â¢s life led him to become an existentialist. He believed that a man is thrown into the world, suffers and struggles there and then gradually defines himself. This is exactly what happened to him. He had a difficult life to begin with, starting with his fatherââ¬â¢s death, his motherââ¬â¢s remarriage, his war experience and more, yet in the end he realized that there was nothing he could do about it and he must accept everything that comes his way. Jean Paul Sartre damaged his health by smoking and drinking heavily and on April 15, 1980 he died of a smoking related complaint. More than 25,000 people lined the streets of Paris for the funeral procession on April 19, 1980. Sartres ashes were buried at the Montparnasse Cemetery.

After they saw that I wouldnt stay, my mom had to stay there with me thru out that whole day. As the first day went on I was making a bunch of friends with my new classmates. When the second day came I wanted my mom to stay at school but I realized that she had to go to work. After she had left I saw a table that had some crayons and some paper on it, so I ventured over to it and stood by the seat watching to see if anyone was going to stop me from drawing. No one came so I took a seat, a piece of paper, and of course a blue coloring pencil just like the one I had at home and started to draw. When the other children saw that I was already hard at work with my drawing, which somewhat looked like a cow, they came and sat down with me. Quality care for patients in the hospital is important to their healing process. It is important to know what the nursing-sensitive indicators are and how they affect patients. In this scenario with Mr. J, many members of the healthcare team were not doing enough to make sure he was safe and that his needs were met to the fullest. Knowing what the nursing- sensitive indicators are could have helped prevent Mr. J from developing a pressure ulcer and making sure he was getting the correct diet. The healthcare team responsible for Mr. J did not advocate for him like they should have and let things slip when they should have been reported and taken care of. Understanding nursing-sensitive indicators can help nurses deliver the best care possible to their patients and help minimize complications and increase patient satisfaction. Some of the issues that happened with Mr. Jââ¬â¢s case could have led to more serious complications. Restraining Mr. J when it was not necessary increased his chance of developing a pressure ulcer and could also have led to further serious complications such as developing post surgical complications such a deep vein thrombosis which would increase his stay in the hospital. Some attributes on which company needs to stress, as the points of its category will affect the scorecard of the client. It means clients whose age is between 48-58 are in more demand than client whose age is between 28-38 and 75+. The company will go for this age of client first rather than these two.
